Valentine’s Day may have passed, but we’re not done thinking about hearts yet! Every February is Heart Health Month, meaning it’s the perfect time to step back and look at what we can each do to improve and upkeep the health of our precious hearts! These little guys are super important to keep us going, so take a moment to read on for ways to keep yours beating strong (and a few ways we can help you, too)!
One of the easiest ways to keep your heart healthy is by keeping those pesky stress levels down. Stress and anger have been proven to lead to high blood pressure and heart disease, so it’s important to keep them in check. One of our favorite ways? Spend a relaxing day at the beach soaking up the sun, sand, and sea!
Did you know the average human heart pumps about 115,200 times per day?! That’s a lot of work that needs good, clean food to fuel it. This month you should put down the junk food and opt for better, more heart-healthy options. The perfect place to start: Top of Waikiki! Our menu is full of heart healthy options that are packed full of amazing grains and greens, healthy fats and proteins, delicious fruits and farm-to-table ingredients that will definitely keep your stomach satisfied and your heart happy. Check out our recommendations for dishes that are healthy and tasty:
House Salad $12
MA’O Farms sassy mix, radishes, HO Farms tomatoes, and cucumbers with a pomegranate vinaigrette and sliced almonds
On top of being healthy and delicious, our House Salad is also giving back to the community as a part of Localicious Hawaii! Throughout the month of March, for every Localicious item served, we will be donating $1 to the Hawaii Agricultural Foundation to support agriculture education in Hawaii’s public schools.
Kona Kanpachi with Tomato Dashi $36
Pan-roasted Kona Kanpachi with tomato dashi, soy watercress, and onion relish
Strawberry Almond Shortcake $9
Almond financier with balsamic strawberries, whipped cream, and vanilla gelato
We love a good cocktail or glass of wine as much as the next person but know that lots of alcohol isn’t good for your heart. The good news is that trying to keep your alcohol intake to a few drinks per week is easy when you know you’re making smart decisions! So, grab a glass of red wine or our featured cocktail, the Hawaiian Hurricane, made with KoHana Kea Hawaiian Agricole rum, Plantation 3 Stars rum, strawberry, lilikoi, mango, pineapple, lime.
Exercise is a given for those wanting to keep their hearts as healthy as possible! Making sure to get exercise every day (or a few times a week, if you’re like us) is crucial to staying as healthy as you can. One great thing about living in Hawaii is that there are countless ways to get active that are super enjoyable – go for a hike, a swim at your favorite beach, walk in your favorite park or even go paddle boarding!
Are you ready to get Heart Healthy? Take some time this month (and beyond) to take care of yourself and your heart, and don’t forget to make a reservation to try our delicious Heart Healthy options!
