The 6 Rules of a True Martini

National Martini Day is June 19th and in honor of this *pinkies up* sophisticated holiday, we’re telling you the 6 rules of the martini! That’s right, there are rules. Now the exact origin of the martini is unknown, but we can all agree that it has a permanent place in the pantheon of classic cocktails. With mixology becoming more and more trendy and so many variations on this classic cocktail being created, we have to ask, “is that really a martini?”

Rule #1: It has to have gin

Vodka is also accepted, although very strict martini-lovers may argue with that one. We say vodka is fine!

Rule #2: It has to have vermouth in it

We’re not budging with this one like we did on #1. A martini needs to have vermouth, which is an aromatized, fortified white wine flavored with various botanicals. Without the vermouth, your martini would just be vodka… (Which is fine if that’s your cup of tea vodka)

Rule #3: Garnish with olives or a lemon twist only

Some will say that olives are the only way to go, but olives or a lemon twist are both accepted martini garnishes.

Rule #4: Stirred, not shaken

Sorry, James Bond! Spirit-forward cocktails should be stirred instead of shaken to keep the integrity of the ingredients. Shaking disrupts the drink, waters it down, and often leaves small ice chips in your glass. We don’t know about you, but we prefer our martinis sans-ice chips.

Rule #5: No fruity flavors!

A martini is meant to be dry, simple, and sophisticated, not sweet and fruity with flavored vodka or anything of that sort. Cosmopolitan? Not a martini.

Rule #6: Rules are meant to be broken…

Because without a few broken rules every once in a while, life wouldn’t be any fun!

To all our martini connoisseurs: please forgive us, but if you like fun and non-traditional cocktails then you will absolutely love Top of Waikiki’s Famous Gummy Bear Martini! Made with vodka, Giffard’s lychee & peach liqueurs, lemon juice, and garnished with a row of gummy bears, this martini breaks just enough of the previously mentioned rules. Reserve your table to give it a try today or join us for happy hour from 5-9:30pm at the bar where the Gummy Bear Martini is only $9! You may ask if it’s really a martini, but you won’t be able to deny that it’s really delicious!
